Finance Director

The Director of Finance/Senior Corporate Controller Controller has responsibility for managing the overall financial operations of the Development / Holding companies of the Family of Companies and will provide accurate information, including analysis, budgeting, forecasting, consolidation, and preparing financial reports. The Controller will be responsible for directing and managing the Company’s accounting functions, including establishing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures, budgeting and forecasting, cash flow management, preparing financial statements and reporting to senior management and external partners. The Controller oversees the Governance of the Company’s accounting systems and implements changes as required. 
 

Job Description

The Finance Director shall be responsible in performing the following:

 

  • Oversee business operations, including setting up reporting systems, implementing internal controls and systems procedures, new project evaluation, project closing and funding, cash flow management, payables/receivables, processes and policies.

  • Responsible for the supervision, guidance and overall smooth operations of the Accounting Department.

  • Provide support and advice to the CFO on various business issues, including strategy, financing, and acquisitions.

  • Liaise and manage the relationship with business partners, accounting firms, law firms, banks, external auditors, insurers, realtors, and government auditors, and communicate with the executive team on any issues.

  • Support Development team with proformas, disclosure statements, building closings, and manage changes.

  • Collaborate with the executive team and review the procurement of assets and sales, construction and lease contracts.

  • Responsible for accounting & reporting (internal & external) for all affiliated companies.

  • Prepare and analyze cash flow projections, budgets, and forecasts.

  • Review calculations, procurement of assets and sales, and construction & lease contracts.

  • Preparation of long-range business plans, including projections of taxable income, cash flow and capital projections.

  • Responsible for year-end audits for all the companies, internal controls and annual corporate budgets.

  • Continually monitor and review accounting processes and procedures and recommend changes as appropriate to improve internal controls and/or efficiencies.

  • Assign and authorize cheques, purchase orders and invoices.

  • Other duties as required. 

Qualifications

You must have:​

  • University Degree in Business, Real Estate or related field, and a Professional Designation (CPA, CA, CGA, CMA) preferred

  • 5+ years of accounting experience within a real estate company 

  • Excellent knowledge of accounting practices as applied to real estate development, property management, cash flow forecasting, and financial and management reporting

  • Extensive experience and knowledge of all aspects of corporate accounting and financial management

  • Thorough understanding of documents and agreements such as co-owners’ agreements, development agreements, property management and leasing agreements, and other similar real estate agreements 

  • Knowledge of accounting principles, practices, and applications 

  • Knowledge of budget preparation and analysis techniques 

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate across all levels within the organization

  • Financial analysis, budgeting, and some strategic planning experience

  • Good project management skills and the ability to motivate teams to produce quality work within tight timeframes 

  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to make the necessary decisions to move forward with the job at hand 

  • Excellent leadership, communication, presentation, problem-solving, and organizational skills are essential

  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts

  • Able to work well under pressure and meet set deadlines with strong attention to detail in all areas of work

  • Intermediate to Advanced Microsoft Excel skills

  • Experience with the Yardi accounting system or similar would be an asset
